Prenatal Program

What is Prenatal Yoga?

Prenatal Yoga uses postures, breathing, and meditation to help ease pregnancy, delivery, and the after effects of birth. The classes create strength, focus, flexibility and awareness through a gentle practice designed especially for the pregnant woman's needs. Prenatal Yoga classes provide a safe, peaceful and supportive environment for expectant mothers and are a wonderful way to connect with other mothers-to-be.

How early can I start taking prenatal yoga classes?

There is no set answer to this question. In general, the saying among prenatal yoga teachers goes "never too early — never too late." However, sometimes it is recommended not to practice during the first trimester (12 weeks). Listen to your own body and honor its needs and limitations. If you feel fine, regardless of how early or far along you are in your pregnancy, you can practice.

I never did yoga before, can I still take Prenatal Classes?

No prior yoga experience is needed. Quite a few women attending our prenatal classes are new to yoga. Pregnancy is a wonderful time to begin your yoga journey since your focus is naturally turned more inwards and many women are more in tune with their body during this time.

Do I need to bring a doctor's or midwife's note?

We highly recommend that you consult with your physician or midwife prior to attending our classes, however a written note from them is not required. Please know that we require signing a liability waiver prior to joining a class at The Yoga Room for the first time.

What should I wear and bring?

Do I have to pre-register? How long is a session?

Please call the studio. Currently all of our prenatal classes that are held in the Astoria location are on-going and do not require pre-registration. Prenatal classes that are held in the Long Island City studio need pre-registration.

I've been practicing yoga for a while. Can I continue to attend normal classes or should I switch to prenatal classes — and when?

As long as you feel comfortable attending regular classes and are able to follow them, you can continue your normal practice. Please inform the instructor that you are pregnant, as modification of certain poses will be necessary.

At some point, you may want to consider joining a prenatal class because of the tailored preparation for labor and childbirth that it offers. Also, you will certainly enjoy and benefit from the community and support of other pregnant yogis.
